The Beginning of Polaris® Motorsports

Our story takes place in 1945, when World War II was at an end and there was a high demand for metal production. A small company named Hetteen Hoist & Derrick crafted unique machines for farmers. The nature of their work was seasonal and they spent their off-season hunting and fishing, which created a need for an efficient way to traverse the long distances across the snow. They worked together to craft a functional snowmobile. This invention was intended only for their personal use, but it quickly caught the eye of others and demand for it sparked. They began producing and selling their snowmobile to meet customer demand.

 

Growth of Polaris® Motorsports

By 1960, the company went by the name Polaris® and was enjoying rapid growth. A sudden boom in the market brought the need for management skills, so the company was sold to Textron. Continued growth throughout the 1970s resulted in the growth of Polaris® motorsports. But then a recession hit and by the end of the decade, only three manufacturers in this market were left.

 

Rebirth of Polaris® Motorsports

Textron was facing company liquidation and a plant shutdown, so they instructed the Polaris® president to sell the company. Instead, he led a buyout and began rebuilding the company with only 100 workers. Their dedication and hard work allowed them to repay the Textron debt ahead of schedule.

 

In 1984, Polaris® released its first ATV model. In 1990, they became the first major United States powersports manufacturer to unveil a personal watercraft line. These are a few of the many ways that the company has pursued innovation and blazing new trails over their history. Today, their models build on decades of forward-thinking and advancements to ensure they deliver exceptional experiences to customers.
